Get Down With It 'car' promo 1971

Spring 1971

I was living in Melbourne in the summer of  1999 and it was there that I first saw the now well known video clip that accompanied 1971's breakthrough hit 'Get Down With It'

In the clip, Noddy, Don, Jim and Dave were seen to be being driven in a rather large garish American gas guzzler car, probably a Cadillac around motorway slip roads eventually leading to a Power station where those zany Slade boys played up to the cameras and did some boot dancing atop a huge gasometer.

The film cameras that they were playing up to belonged to a company that the band had by then quite a long association with, Caravel, who had been shooting promo films of various bands, usually for in house record company promotional use.
Caravel had filmed Slade at the then new Euston station in London, again, being zany Slade boys running around the concourse and travelling the escalators.

I managed to tape the Slade clip from an all night rolling video pop show called 'Night Shift' (still image from the SIE colourised version) that was broadcast in Victoria after midnight at weekends. The footage wasn't great, as can be seen, and was severely glitched, in addition, it was titled as 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now', this has over the years, along with blatant misinformation clouded the veracity around the clip and I aim to put this right here and now!
At SIE we try always to never publish anything unless we can prove the dates, and in this instance we cannot.
We can however with a great degree of certainty say where it was filmed.

Long time Slade In England member, the late Duncan Spokes, a Bristolean  and gas engineer travelled the road daily and immediately identified the road section they were filmed at as the Almondsbury Interchange at the A38 junction with the M5 motorway.
The power station was the then pre nuclear power plant at Berkley station, a place that Duncan had visited many times in his professional life.
It was bandied around online that the footage was filmed on the 19th of May 1972, which was apreposterous notion to make, but once it gets printed online, as they say, misinformation can travel around the planet before the truth gets its trousers on!

On the 17th of May 1972 Slade played in Barry, Wales, and had a day off on the 18th of May where in my view they travelles to Scotland to begin the Scottish leg of their 1972 tour, they played Glasgow on the night of the 19th  and I have therefore discounted the ridiculos notion that it was filmed that day, or indeed any day in 1972.

Let us try to get the filming date out of the way!

The footage despite it's poor quality clearly shows the band in their clothing that they were wearing for most of 1971 up to and including their first #1 hit 'Coz I Luv You' they were photographed wearing these clothes on many many occasions as their star began to burn brightly.
Get Down with It was released as 'Get Down & Get With It' on the 12th May 1971 and the band could have filmed the promo during May or June of that year as it began to pick up sales following it's reissue with the correct title and credits, an appearance on Roger Whittakers World Of Music helped push the band further into the psyche of the nation and although it was a slow burner and didn't make the top 30 until 26th July 1971, I am sure that the filming had already taken place.

The start of the video clip has Holder cupping his hands and hollering, a perfect start for GDWI and playing the track at the correct speed there is the aforementioned 'boot dancing' at the right place in the song, there is no doubt in my mind that this is a 1971 spring filmed clip.

So where does the 1972 erroneous information come from? Australia of course!
The Australians live a loooong waaay away, and before the internet they never had much to work with and so the original filmed GDWI promo that had found its way to Aussie TV was dug out and redubbed with Mama and captioned as such.
The Australians have often played fast and loose with footage on their TV stations and so there were two versions of the same footage doing the rounds...one captioned MWACN that featured the GDWI audio, and the other captioned MWACN with the audio that fitted accordingly.
It seems that someone was determined to have this 1971 footage classed as 1972, it isn't.
A few years ago a cleaner clip was found and broadcast on the late night Aussie 'Rage' slot, it had the correct audio, and was better quality footage but was broadcast so dark that there are places in the film that the band cannot be seen because of the exposure being out of whack.

I hope this clears up the origin of the clip and hope that one day a nice clear digitally remastered version can be seen.

NIGHT DREAMS ~ "Dreams, Fantasy and Illusions" NBC Television August 1975

Slade, during their self imposed exile to the United States of America beginning in 1975 took every available opportunity to them to project their image and music onto the population of the country. They toured relentlessly and criss crossed the country many times over in their effort to gain the wide raging acceptance that would equate to record sales and chart success in the hardest market of them all.
The band had enjoyed some minor national chart success on their early US tours and indeed had pockets of fans and even strongholds in New York and some parts of the mid west, but national success had, and was to continue to elude them for almost another decade.

They were given the opportunity for national exposure by NBC Television who had commissioned two 90 minute TV 'spectaculars' under the title 'Night Dreams'  and a bizarre and somewhat off the wall premis they seemed to be, I say seemed to be because no footage is known to exist of either of the two shows that were made and I only know about the shows and Slade's appearance on the second of the two, because long time Floridian fan and long time friend of Slade In England, Jen Mandli not only told me about it, but sent me a taped 'from the TV' audio recording of what she was able to record onto her tape recorder by holding the microphone in front of the TV speaker in the middle of the night!

The second show, which featured Slade, entitled Night Dreams "Dreams, Fantasy and Illusions" was broadcast by NBC on channel 2 directly following on from their top rated  Tonight show starring Johnny Carson. on 8th August but at 1am which would not have helped the viewing figures! The show starred Rex Reed, a hammy US film critic who linked the various acts throughout.

Rex Reed, a Mike Reid lookalike US film critic who hosted the show from a large ornate wicker chair presented the various acts which included sketches, magic tricks/illusions and bizarre dream sequences set to poetry and 'experimental music'.

The show was commissioned by NBC to replace long running late night music show 'Midnight Special' and those in power at NBC clearly thought they were on to a winner when they announced the show and promised a musical extravaganza featuring top talent from around the world.

That talent  in this show consisted of  Slade, Freddy Fender; Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, a tribute to the Lone Ranger, magician Carl Ballantine, Tony Greco, Pepi Hernandez; Don Novello, the improvisational Groundlings, illusionist Lee Edwards; and a "Rock Dreams" sequence.

Rod Stewart gets a mention in the actual intro to the show that was broadcast, but no mention of him or what he performed appears in any TV listing or press release.

Musical numbers that would feature were  "Coming Down Your Way," "Kite Man," "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "Til the World Ends."
All performed by US veterans Three Dog Night  just before 'musical differences' split them up.

Little Richard, a hero of Holders, would appear and perform "I Saw Her Standing There," "Lovesick Blues," and "I Saw What You Did,"

Slade chipped in with three tracks that they were promoting at the time from their newly released 'In Flame' LP, those being "Them Kinda Monkeys Can't Swing," " Far Far Away" and "How Does It Feel."

Freddy Fender, Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds contributed with "Before the Next Teardrop Falls."  and "Falling in Love" and "Don't Pull Your Love." respectively!

In addition to the three tracks that the band played (live) they also appeared in a strange dream sequence dressed it would appear as extras from Mary Poppins singing 'I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts (rolla bolla bolla penny a pinch)...yes....that one!

This brings me on to Jen Mandli, who sneaked to the TV set in the middle of the night to watch Noddy, Don, Jim and Dave on American TV, she decided that it would be a good idea to try to tape the show, and she managed to catch for posterity both Far Far Away and a reprise of How Does It Feel.....as well as coconuts, unfortunately  'Them Kinda Monkeys Can't Swing' didn't survive the years and is lost.

Jen was one of the first US fans that contacted me via the newly posted Slade In England web site in 1997 and we quickly became firm friends and I was delighted to receive from her a battered old cassette tape from which I was able to rescue and enhance those decades old recordings which now reside in the Slade In england archives!

One never knows what gems of television remain to be unearthed and brought to light, and despite my searching in various archives it seems that 'Night Dreams' featuring Slade is only mentioned in archive US newspaper TV listings, I was able to find the photographs that accompany this article for sale on a well known photo archive site, but the press release photo of Rex Reed and accompanying blurb, those TV listings, and the SIE archive audio recording is all that now remains of a long forgotten US TV spectacular!!

Welcome!

Staffordshire 1960

In the United Kingdom during the 1960's, Midland Beat was a genre of its own. The central area of England is logically referred to as the Midlands and it seemed to have more than its fair share of musical aptitude. Many, like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, were born and bred there while others, like Cream, spent a lot of time learning their craft there.

This area would spawn one of the UK's biggest exports of the 70's, certainly in Europe. There is no doubt that the members of Slade grew up listening to the music of artists such as Buddy HollyThe Everly BrothersCliff Richard and The Shadows right through to the biggest icons of the 1960's. The Beatles influence would be prevalent throughout the group's career.

There are Pop bands, there are Rock bands and then there are musical institutions. All three of these descriptions apply to this four man, hit making machine from the West Midlands. With a string of misspelt chart toppers, an outlandish wardrobe and a killer, live act that was second to none. Slade's achievements during the 1970's were little short of phenomenal: their crunching rock 'n' roll and crazee antics would inspire acts such as Kiss, Kurt Cobain, Oasis, Twisted Sister, Alice Cooper, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Darkness and even comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, to pick up guitars. And what's more, the stunning re-birth from a career slump during the following decade revealed an enviable stubborn streak and tenacity worthy of only the rare few.

Slade were a top notch group that were dragged into the black hole of Glam Rock, a short lived fad that deflected from who they really were, one of the world's greatest Rock bands. Loud, gregarious and, above all, entertaining with an affable, rabble-rousing demagogue up front.
"Slade were down to earth and honest, and it's a real shame there's not more bands around like them, as you won't find this kind of honesty in the record business these days; mores the pity."
Dennis Munday: Ex Polydor Marketing October 2012

Hello Goodbye: The Jim Lea Productions

Citizen Kane (Trojan Records, 1985) is the only single that Jim released under his own name, Jimmy Lea. The B-side to this was Poland (a version of Slade's Lemme Love Into Ya), which is also on The Dummies album and released under the name of Greenfields Of Tong on a 7" single. Citizen Kane sounds like a cross between Ghostbusters and One Night In Bangkok.
1982 - SPEED FIRED 2
GREENFIELDS OF TONG - POLAND / POLAND (INSTRUMENTAL)

Hello Goodbye (Shotgun Records, 1994) released under the name of Gang of Angels. Not really up to Jim's usual standards. The B-side to this was Jim Jam which had previously been released as The Clout.

Where Have All The Good Girls Gone by the Crybabies (1991) and Shooting Me Down by Crome Molly (1988). Jim produced both these on his own, but it is worth noting that Shooting Me Down is actually a Holder/Lea-penned song. One of the musicians from Crome Molly was on a Slade forum and he told a couple of stories about the recording of the track. Their manager had asked Jim to work with the band. Jim showed up at one of their out-door gigs to check them out wearing wellingtons, which didn't seem very Rock 'n' Roll but then that's Jim. He also said that it was difficult working with him because Jim wanted things his way or not at all. Basically, he said Jim was a nice guy who would hang out with the band for beers after a day's work in the studio.

Jim produced two cover songs for The Redbeards From Texas (Receiver Records 1986), I Saw Her Standing There and Gudbuy T'Jane. Both are performed in a ZZ Top inspired style.
Both tracks were taken from The Redbeards' album, "Havin' A Ball".

Annabella released Fever in 1986. Annabella Lwin was the 14 year old vocalist for early 80's Punk band Bow Wow Wow (I Want Candy, Wild In The Country & C30, C60, C90, Go!)before breaking into a solo career in 1986. Jim produced two tracks (with Frank on drums) for her debut album, Fever, the other being School's Out.

Simple Love (1983) by Sue Scadding is a Holder/Lea composition, it is produced solely by Jim and has brother Frank Lea playing the drums while Jim plays all the other instruments. Nod has claimed that it was a Top 20 hit back in 1983, but I think it was just wistful thinking on his behalf. The closest it got to the Top 20 was a performance on TOTP.

Noddy and Jim produced Girlschool together:
"In 1983 he produced 3 songs: '20th Century Boy', 'High & Dry' and 'Burning In The Heat Of Love' for the all female band Girlschool together with Noddy Holder."
It was pretty tough as the girls were more interested in getting stoned than in recording. Originally Jim and Nod were supposed to produce an album with the girls, but in the end they gave up after 3 songs, as they just couldn't get the girls to work.

We'll Bring The House Down c/w Jim Jam (Mooncrest Records 1990), recorded under the name The Clout.

The songs on the Whild CDS are all only Jim Lea compositions. Jim totally solo, playing all instruments incl. a drum machine.

All the Dummies and the other solo-singles are all recorded with Frank Lea (Jim's younger brother) on drums, Louise Lea on backing vocals and Jim on everything else. All the "old" Slade-songs are credited to Holder/Lea, also WBTHD. The rest is credited solely to Jim except She's The Only Woman which is not featured on the Dummies CD as it is not Jim on vocal. In the picture, younger brother Frank is on the left, Jim on the right and the singer in the middle. The writer credit is Faulkner & Lea F.

( There is also an unreleased track by The Dummies, - a Cover Version of Johnny Kidd And The Pirates' - I'll Never Get Over You ! )

The China Dolls
1982 - SPEED FIRED 1
THE CHINA DOLLS - ONE HIT WONDER / AIN'T LOVE AIN'T BAD

The remake of Coz I Luv You (Trojan Records 1994) was relased under the name Jimbo featuring Bull. I believe Bull is one of The Specials (80's Ska Band) partly because the project was a joint venture between Jim and some of The Specials and was originally called The X-Specials (Receiver Records) but publishers put a block on it.

Gary Holton was an actor who played the part of Cockney Wayne in UK tv's Auf Wiedersehen Pet, but he'd been in rock music since 1974. Catch A Falling Star was produced and performed by Jim Lea and released in 1984. That's How The Story Goes was recorded at the same time but had to wait for "Gary Holton" the album release in 1986 after his death.

Jim's Whild CDS was released on Jet Records in 2000 featuring three tracks, I'll Be John You'll Be Yoko, Megadrive and I Go Wild. This is solely Jim writing, singing, playing, producing etc. Good coherent flow in both music and lyrics that revolve around Jim's schizofrenia theme.

Mama's Jasje was the most popular boyband in Holland around 2000 when the album was released which features the 3 Jim-penned songs. The band name means Mother's Jacket and Samen Door Het Vuur means Together By The Fire. It's original title was Great Big Family and you can hear it is the song that Jim did in Bilston. Wie Ben Jij (Who Are You), which had the original title Who Am I (so much more Jim!!) which sounds like a possible Eurovision Song Contest entry. The bass player on Wie Bien Jij is Trevor Holliday - the first bass player of Slade II. The third song is Laatste Dag Van De Lente (Last Day Of Spring) with its original title July To September. It has an annoying tendency of sticking in your brain!
