Delighted To See You

Abbey Road April 20th, 1967

Their contract with EMI, courtesy of Fowley, bought them the opportunity to record *"a couple of songs" at the Abbey Road studios.
"I know nothing of the Abbey Road recording.... I returned to the USA before EMI/Columbia released 'You Better Run'..."
Kim Fowley 2010

In the session conducted by the legendary Norman Smith, they produced Delighted To See You, upon which Smith has written 'Not suitable for long term contract'. #Seems a bit harsh?

It is interesting to compare The 'N Betweens version with the Honeybus original written by Pete Dello and released as a Deram 45 on 30th June 1967. An extract can be heard on the site below.

"Christened Honeybus by Ray Cane, they brought in Terry Noon as their manager and entered Regent Sound studio to cut their debut single in Spring 1967. The recording was made using Russ Ballard and Bob Henrit of The Roulettes and two tracks were laid down. Licenced to Decca, "Delighted To See You" b/w "The Breaking Up Scene", both written by Pete Dello, appeared on the label's Deram subsidiary in June 1967."

Regent Sound is the London studio where The 'N Betweens worked with Kim Fowley the previous year. Since their version of Delighted... was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on 20th April 1967 (Spring) apart from the obvious benefit of a superior Norman Smith production, I think it's also fair to say that The 'N Betweens produced a far more dynamic record. Testament again to their extremely effective and 'ahead of their time' arrangements, courtesy of Jim Lea I would guess.

The 25th of April 1963 entry has got to be a clerical error because the band were not together then?

The 'N Betweens themselves (at least Abbey Road got their name right) were far more fascinated by the fact that The Beatles were recording in the next room. It would turn out to be the Sgt. Pepper's album.

The song can be found on the 1994 compilation "Psychedelia At Abbey Road"

Delighted To See You
(P. Dello)
It's been a long time now since we first met,
No I didn't forget the look on your face,
And now you turn up out of the blue,
I can't believe that it's really you.
Well I'm delighted to see you my little child,
Delighted to feel your lips on mine,
Delighted to spend the night with you,
My little child, my little one.
I remember the time oh so long ago,
When I didn't know my way around,
But those days are over and now I can see,
That you've learned a lot just like me.
Well I'm delighted to see you my little child,
Delighted to feel your lips on mine,
Delighted to spend the night with you,
My little child, my little one.
Well I'm delighted to see you my little child,
Delighted to feel your lips on mine,
Delighted to spend the night with you,
My little child, my little one.
