Gudbuy T'Jane

November 11th, 1972

Polydor Records  - 2058-312

The single peaked at #2 in the UK, losing the top spot to Chuck  Berry's My Ding-A-Ling.  It did however, peak at #1 in the New Musical Express charts.  Slade's two previous singles had charted at #1 in the UK.  The single lasted 13 weeks in the top 100.  It stayed in the top 10 from the moment it was released for 8 weeks.  The single was also the most successful of Slade's 1970's singles in the United States, peaking at #68.

At the time, the band was on tour and needed a follow up track to Mama Weer All Crazee Now.  The idea came to Lea while he was sitting by a pool in San Diego.  He completed it in the toilet in the plane on the flight home.  Holder's lyrics came from a TV show he saw in San Francisco on which the band appeared, and on which a girl called Jane demonstrated a Sex Toy.  Holder completed the lyrics just prior to the session.  Holder's original lyrics were Hello To Jane but Jim decided that it would sound better as Goodbye To Jane when they went to record it.  The loose feel of the record is due to the fact that the band had never played the song before until that day, the single release was 'Take 2'.

Gudbuy T' Jane
(Noddy Holder & Jim Lea)

Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,

She's a dark horse, see if she can
Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,
Painted up like a fancy young man

[Chorus]
She's a queen,
Can't you see what I mean,
She's a queen
See, see, she's a queen
And I know she's alright, alright, alright, alright
I say you're so young, you're so young
I say you're so young, you're so young
I say you're so young, you're so young

I said
Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,
Get a kick from her forties trip boots
Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,
Has them made to match up to her suits

[Chorus]

Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,
Like a dark horse see how she ran
Goodbye T' Jane, goodbye T' Jane,
Spits on me cos' she knows that she can

[Chorus]

I say you're so young, she's alright, alright, alright, alright.
I say you're so young, you're so young, alright, alrightI say you're so young...

I Won't Let It 'Appen Agen
(Jim Lea)

I won't sing, I won't shout if you throw me out
I'll just go on my way with nothing to say
But it's not gonna 'appen, and no, it won't 'appen
I won't let ,it 'appen agen.

You say you lie an' you say that you might
Let me return to stay aroun' with you
But it's not gonna 'appen, and no, it won't 'appen
Oh I won't let it 'appen agen, oh no, no no

I try hard to like you and that's all I can do
Let me return to stay aroun' with you
But it's...
